Not every estate needs probate. Answer 5 questions to find out if you need to apply, what it will cost, and what to do next.

Step 1 of 5

Did the person who died leave a will?

This determines whether you apply for a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration.

What is probate?

Probate is the legal process of administering a deceased person's estate. If you are named as an executor in someone's will, or you are the next of kin when someone dies without a will, you may need to apply for a Grant of Probate (or Letters of Administration) before you can access their assets.

Not all estates require probate. Small estates, jointly-held assets, and some types of accounts can be handled without it. Our free checker helps you understand whether you need to apply.
